Prior to his Senate tenure, he was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama by President Bill Clinton, where he gained national recognition for prosecuting the 1963 Birmingham church bombing case. Jones ran for re-election in 2020 but lost to Republican Tommy Tuberville. His victory in the 2017 special election, defeating Roy Moore, made him the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Alabama in over two decades.
