Senate / Republican / South DakotaOn January 6th, 2015, Senator Marion Michael “Mike” Rounds was sworn into the United States Senate. He serves on five committees, including Armed Services, Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, Indian Affairs, Veterans' Affairs, and the Select Committee on Intelligence. Prior to his Senate career, Rounds was the 31st Governor of South Dakota from 2003 to 2011. He also served five terms in the South Dakota State Senate from 1991 to 2000, and as Senate Majority Leader from 1995 to 2000. As governor, he focused on economic growth, tax reduction, and strengthening families. Born in Huron, South Dakota, the eldest of 11 children, Rounds earned a bachelor's degree in political science from South Dakota State University. In the private sector, he built a successful insurance and real estate business. He now resides in Fort Pierre and is the father of four children and grandfather to 11.
